Former Supreme Court Judge Justice AM Khanwilkar to Head Lokpal as Chairperson
Six other members have also been chosen to work for the anti-corruption authority
The President of India Draupadi Murmu has appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice AM Khanwilkar as the new Chairperson of the Lokpal.
The President’s office apprised about the appointment in a press note on its official website. In addition, six other members have also been chosen to work for the anti-corruption authority.
The judicial members are Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, Justice Sanjay Yadav and Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and other members are Sushil Chandra, Pankaj Kumar and Ajay Tirkey.
The decision to appoint Justice Khanwilkar as the new Lokpal of India was taken by a high-level committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Congress party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
The Lokpal was established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013. It is tasked with inquiring and investigating allegations of corruption against public functionaries falling within the scope and ambit of the Lokpal Act.
Currently, Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty, the former Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, is serving as its acting chairperson.
