The Goa government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking a relook at the mining ban, more than a year after the Supreme Court banned mining in the state in 2018.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has stated that the Goa state government is deeply concerned about the impact of the mining ban on livelihoods of people living in the state's mining belt.
“A review petition against the Supreme Court judgment imposing mining ban in Goa has been filed by the Goa government. Although delayed, our faith in judiciary remains strong,” Sawant stated.
“We are deeply concerned by the effects of the mining ban on the livelihoods of our people. This major step is one of our many persistent attempts towards safeguarding the interests of the mining community and Goa’s economy,” he stated.
It may be recalled that the Supreme Court had banned mining in the state of Goa in March 2018, due to irregularities in the sector.
Presently, the Goa state government is in consultations with the central government to find a way to restart mining in Goa at the earliest.
When Goa’s mining industry was at its peak in 2011, mining accounted for nearly 30% of Goa's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
