During the last two years, the Gujarat Housing Board (GHB) and urban local bodies have developed some 30,000 affordable houses costing between Rs. 11 lakhs and 19 lakhs. Another 30,000 houses are under construction.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana — Urban (PMAY-U) scheme envisions the development of 5.24 lakh affordable houses, out of which 2.70 lakh have already been built. The remaining units are under construction and will be completed by 2021.
According to Lochan Sehra, secretary of the (housing and Nirmal Gujarat), urban development and urban housing department, the department has maintained its lead in the construction of houses under the said scheme with 82% completion. Sehra added that the government not only built under the (public private partnership), but also gave subsidies of upto Rs. 2.5 lakhs.
Various government agencies have forayed into affordable housing directly and through PPP. The redevelopment of houses on private slum land is expected to mitigate prices of affordable homes.
