Supreme Court Justice Ravindra Bhat handed out relief packages to the needy migrant workers amidst the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.
As a result of the lockdown, a large number of migrant workers have been left without jobs and food or shelter as many of the businesses have been shut down.
The Coronavirus enforced 21 day lockdown has triggered a mass exodus of migrant workers across the country.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs issued directions to the Governments of States and Union Territories to control the movement of large number of migrant workers stating that such movement would violate the lockdown measures on maintaining social distance. It has also directed the States to ensure adequate arrangements of temporary shelters, and provision of food, etc. for the poor and needy people, including migrant labourers and industrial workers who are stranded due to lockdown measures in their respective states.
The States and Union Territories have been directed to undertake various measures to ensure that the vulnerable groups get free foodgrains and other essential commodities.
In another advisory to all States and Union territories, the Home Ministry has directed that arrangements for uninterrupted supply of essential commodities to hotels, working women hostels should be made so that they continue to live in existing facilities.
