DLA Piper advised BMW and Mercedes-Benz on the sale of their European mobility platform FreeNow to Lyft, marking a key shift in the ride-hailing landscape.

DLA Piper advised BMW and Mercedes-Benz on the sale of FreeNow to Lyft

DLA Piper advised BMW Group and Mercedes-Benz Group on the sale of their joint European multi-mobility app FreeNow to Lyft, a leading ride-hailing marketplace.

FreeNow, one of Europe’s top multi-mobility apps, offers services such as taxis, private hire vehicles (PHVs), car sharing, eScooters, eBikes, eMopeds, and public transport across 9 European countries and over 150 cities. Despite the change in ownership, FreeNow will continue to operate independently and aims for further growth. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions.

The in-house team at Mercedes-Benz was led by Michael Rebholz (Legal Counsel, Legal M&A), while the BMW Group team comprised Dr Matthias Wahl (Senior Legal Counsel), Sascha Ostermann (Legal Counsel), Dr Torsten Dilly, Silvia Meier, and Stephan Kaufmann (all IP).
