DLA Piper Africa advised Mainstream Energy Solutions on Jebba Hydropower Plant 2G4 Turbine Rehabilitation

The global law firm, DLA Piper Africa – Nigeria (Olajide Oyewole LLP) has advised Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) on the closing of transaction documents for the rehabilitation and modernization of the 2G4 Turbine Unit at the Jebba Hydropower Plant. This project is a key phase of MESL’s Capacity Recovery and Expansion Programme. The 2G4 unit, one of six turbines at the facility, has a nameplate capacity of 96.4 MW, and its comprehensive overhaul is designed to extend its service life by 40 years, significantly boosting the plant’s total output toward its 578.4 MW design capacity.

The Jebba 2G4 rehabilitation is more than a maintenance project; it is an investment in grid reliability. Hydropower currently provides roughly 20% of Nigeria’s grid-connected power, meaning every megawatt recovered at the Kainji-Jebba cascade reduces the nation’s reliance on carbon-intensive thermal generation.

DLA Piper Africa – Nigeria (Olajide Oyewole LLP) legal team – Solape Peters (Partner), Oluwatomi Etomi (Legal Director), Ayobami Elias (Associate), and Kanyinsola Taiwo (Associate) – provided full-suite advisory on the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracts, structuring agreements for design, supply, testing, commissioning, and integration of advanced digital control systems and governor equipment. Their work ensured compliance with international bankability standards and helped MESL navigate legal risks associated with utility-scale infrastructure rehabilitation in Nigeria’s evolving power sector.
