Clifford Chance Assisted Barito Renewables Capture Indonesia's Wind Power Crown Jewel

Clifford Chance secured international legal support for PT Barito Renewables and its wind energy subsidiary, PT Barito Wind, as they acquired five wind farm assets in Indonesia from UPC Renewables, adding 395 MW to their potential renewable energy output.

In a landmark deal bolstering Indonesia's green energy backbone, PT Barito Wind has secured a 51 per cent stake in three promising wind farm developments across South Sulawesi (Sidrap 2), Sukabumi, and Lombok – injecting a potential 320 MW into the nation's renewable energy grid. Partnering in this venture, ACEN Renewables International, through its subsidiary ACEN Investments HK Limited, has acquired the remaining 49 per cent of these development assets.

Barito Wind's ambitious green stride does not stop there. It has also made a strategic 100 per cent acquisition of PT UPC Sidrap Bayu Energi, the operator of Indonesia's first and currently largest wind farm – the 75 MW Sidrap 1 – further solidifying its commitment to clean energy leadership. To ensure seamless operations of this pioneering facility, Barito Wind has also taken full ownership of PT Operation and Maintenance Indonesia (OMI), the vital backbone behind Sidrap 1's success. This comprehensive acquisition marks a significant step towards Indonesia's renewable energy goals, with Barito Wind and its partners playing a pivotal role in powering the nation's future with clean, sustainable energy.

With three wind projects totalling 320 MW now powering its green ambitions, Barito Renewables is paving the way for a cleaner Indonesia. Though awaiting final approvals for two additional acquisitions, this early success already strengthens the nation's path toward its 2025 renewable energy target and ultimately, the 2060 net zero dream.

"It's a privilege to advise Barito Renewables on this landmark transaction, which will contribute to the acceleration of Indonesia's energy transition and development of renewables. The complexity of this transaction, involving long-term partnerships, underscores the value of our deep sector expertise and understanding of Southeast Asia. We're honoured to play a part in Indonesia's journey towards net zero emissions," lead partner Melissa Ng said.

A collaborative team from Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, led by counsel Stephanie Juwita Liman and supported by associate Christie Long and trainee Jacie Lim, successfully provided Melissa with comprehensive legal counsel, particularly on Indonesian law matters.

Barito Renewables stands as a beacon of sustainable energy in Indonesia, holding the distinction of being the nation's leading renewable energy company and a proud member of the Barito Pacific Group. Its crown jewel is the Star Energy Geothermal Group, the country's undisputed champion in geothermal energy production. With a staggering 886 MW of geothermal power plants under its belt, Star Energy Geothermal Group fuels homes and businesses across Indonesia, leaving a minimal environmental footprint in its wake.
