Apple appoints Amar Subramanya new VP of AI

He has replaced John Giannandrea, who will serve as an adviser until his retirement in the spring of next year

American multinational technology company, Apple, has appointed veteran researcher Amar Subramanya as its vice president of artificial intelligence (AI). He will report to Craig Federighi, the software chief.

Subramanya, who replaced John Giannandrea, will lead critical areas, including Apple Foundation Models and ML research.

He was serving as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft, after 16 years at Google as head of engineering for the Gemini assistant, apart from handling other roles.

Due to its slackness in the AI arena, Apple has been unable to add related features to its products. Thus, in comparison, its rivals, including Samsung Electronics, have been swift to refresh their devices with AI features.

Meanwhile, Giannandrea will serve as an adviser to Apple until his retirement in the spring of next year.

Early this year, Apple mentioned that AI improvements to its voice assistant Siri would be delayed until 2026. Thereafter, media reports were rife that Apple CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in AI head Giannandrea's ability to execute on product development.
