Bowmans Enhances Africa Growth Strategy with Windhoek Partner Appointment

The Pre-eminent African law firm Bowmans has announced the appointment of Hugo Meyer van den Berg as a Partner in its Windhoek office, marking a significant step in the firm’s continued expansion in Namibia.

The appointment comes at a critical stage in the development of Bowmans Namibia, which was established following the combination of Bowmans and Koep & Partners nearly three years ago. The practice has since demonstrated strong growth and is now well-positioned to further expand its capabilities and market presence.

Welcoming the appointment, Ezra Davids, Chairman and Senior Partner at Bowmans, said,

“We are delighted to welcome Meyer to our commercial team in Namibia. He joins us at a pivotal point in our growth trajectory, bringing a skill set that will benefit our clients not only in Namibia but across the continent.”

Hugo Meyer van den Berg brings over 16 years of experience in private practice, advising clients on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters. His expertise spans key sectors including mining, oil and gas, and energy, alongside significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, financing, regulatory frameworks, competition law, environmental law, banking, and project finance. He is also an admitted notary, a court-appointed mediator, and notably the only individual in private practice in Namibia to hold a doctorate in law.

Prior to joining Bowmans, Meyer was associated with Ellis Shilengudwa Inc as a consultant. Earlier, he spent a substantial part of his career at Koep & Partners, including serving as partner and consultant, where he advised on complex corporate and sector-specific matters. Alongside his legal practice, he has held academic and leadership roles, including serving as an Adjunct Associate Professor and Honorary Research Affiliate at the University of Cape Town, and as a lecturer at the University of Namibia. He has also held leadership positions with the Law Society of Namibia, including serving as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.

Academically, Meyer holds an LLB from Stellenbosch University, an LLM in Mineral Law (cum laude), and a PhD in the regulation of the upstream petroleum industry from the University of Cape Town. His strong academic foundation complements his practical expertise, particularly in mineral law and governance, where he continues to contribute as an adjunct professor.

Meyer’s appointment is expected to significantly enhance Bowmans’ capabilities in high-growth sectors within Namibia and across Africa. His deep sector knowledge, combined with strong synergies with the firm, positions him to play a key role in supporting clients on complex transactions and contributing to the firm’s continued growth in the region.
