Japan Plans To Expand EV Subsidies To Tesla Amid US-Japan Tariff Discussions

Japan is considering offering subsidies for the construction of Tesla electric vehicle (EV) charging stations as part of ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, local media reported.

According to a report by broadcaster TBS on Saturday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has raised concerns regarding Japan's current subsidy policy and requested Tesla's Supercharger network be included in these subsidies as well.

Currently, the Japanese government provides subsidies only for the installation of EV charging stations using the CHAdeMO standard, which was developed in Japan.

Tesla EVs can plug into CHAdeMO-compliant charging points by using a special adapter, but CHAdeMO vehicles are not compatible with Tesla Superchargers.

Meanwhile, Japan and the U.S. are looking forward to a third round of tariff talks and Japanese lead negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is expected to travel to Washington next week, the report said.
