Magic Circle Law Firm Allen & Overy Expands Partnership with 36 Internal Promotions

In its latest partnership round, Allen & Overy (A&O) has elevated 36 lawyers to the position of partner, with 42 per cent of the promotions going to women. This represents an increase from last year's round, where only 36 per cent of the 39 promotions were awarded to women.

The newly promoted partners at Allen & Overy are divided into different practice areas with the banking practice having the most new partners at 12, followed by corporate at 11, six in litigation, four in international capital markets, and three in tax. Starting from May 1, these partners will have specialisms in tech, life science, private capital and environmental, social and governance (ESG).

The magic circle law firm's global network exhibited a broad geographic reach, encompassing 13 offices. Among these, the London office secured the highest number of partners, with a total of 11, three of whom are international capital markets partners - James Smallwood, Andrew Enga, and Tanya O'Hagan. The fourth partner, Hilary Seo, is located in New York.

New York also saw the appointment of four new partners, including Caroline Lapidus in tax, Grace Wang in IP litigation, and Ally de Padua in banking, in addition to Seo.

Both Paris and Sydney witnessed an equal number of partner appointments, with three each. In the French capital, Arthur Sauzay was appointed in corporate, Amine Bourabiat in banking, and Charles Tuffreau in IP litigation. Sydney, on the other hand, welcomed two new corporate partners - Lisa Emanuel and Daniel Harris, along with William Kim in banking.

Out of the six individuals in litigation, three specialise in IP litigation. Tuffreau represents Paris, while Denise Benz serves Munich and Wang is based in New York.

“Congratulations to all of our new partners. The group reflects a very diverse range of talent. I’m also pleased to see a strong geographical spread and a breadth of practice and product specialisms, reflecting the quality and global reach of our new partners. Each member of the cohort brings different expertise and a wealth of experience in providing exceptional service to our clients,” Gareth Price, A&O’s global managing partner said.

David Stone, the Global Head of IP, stated that the recent promotions are in line with the firm's strategy to invest in technology and life sciences, which present significant opportunities to advise clients on intricate and high-stakes patent litigation cases. These appointments are viewed as a complement to the firm's lateral hires and demonstrate their continued commitment to growth and development in these areas.

“Each of our new partners brings a wealth of experience, expertise and client focus to our practice. I congratulate Charles, Denise and Grace on their well-deserved promotions," Stone added.
