The Minister of State for Civil Aviation was responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has clarified before the Parliament that all cases pending against Air India in various courts across the country and foreign shores would have to be dealt with by the airline itself. This would apply even after its acquisition by Tata Sons, and the Government of India shall not intervene.
The Minister of State for Civil Aviation General (Retd.) VK Singh said, "The cases are against Air India as a legal entity and will remain with Air India."
He also informed that 2,657 cases were pending against the airline in national and international courts. These range from service and commercial matters to consumer complaints.
General Singh was responding to a question asked by Sushmita Dev, the Congress Party's Member of Parliament from Silchar, Assam. She had desired to know if the cases would be transferred to the company that bought Air India.
It was also explained that in view of the ongoing litigation of the Central government with Devas Multimedia Ltd (of the Devas-Antrix scam), the Indian government was committed to protecting the Tata Group.
Earlier, foreign investors in Devas had moved the US Federal Court in the Southern District of New York to identify Air-India as an alter ego of the Indian government towards arbitration awards.
