Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has written to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad urging him to expedite the appointment of 43 judges whose names have been approved by the Supreme Court collegium, but are pending government clearance.
CJI Gogoi stated in his letter that there is already a 37% vacancy across high courts and this number is bound to increase with five judges on an average retiring every month, unless at least an equal number of judges are appointed.
The CJI is also believed to have sought the the government’s response on 10 more cases which the Supreme Court Collegium had deferred earlier but is not in a position to take up for consideration since the government has to provide relevant information.
Among the names deferred for appointment as high court judges are Saurabh Kirpal (Delhi High Court), Wasim Sadiq Nargal (J&K High Court), Devendra Kachhawaha, Satish Kumar Sharma, Prabha Sharma, Rameshwar Vyas, Devendra Joshi, Anoop Saxena and Hemant Kumar Jain, who are all judicial officers under the Rajasthan High Court.
Incidentally, the CJI has also reminded the government about the appointment of two other names which were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium.
These include cleared proposals of Sandipan Ganguly (Calcutta High Court) and PV Kunhikrishnan (Kerala High Court).
