Dr Lalit Bhasin honoured for services as Founder-Chairman of the SEPC

On November 9, 2021, Dr Lalit Bhasin was conferred a unique honour by Piyush Goyal, Hon'ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Minister of Consumer Affairs and Food Public Distribution, and Minister of Textiles at a ceremony held at the Shah Jahan Hall, Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi.

Dr Bhasin is the only recipient of this Award in recognition of his services as Founder-Chairman of the Services Export Promotion Council for promoting the export of services from India, encompassing the hospitality sector, healthcare sector, education sector, entertainment sector, engineering services, architectural services, accountancy services, maritime services and legal services.

Conferring the Award on Dr Bhasin, Goyal spoke about expanding the scope of legal services worldwide.

Dr Bhasin has been practising law for the past 58 years since 1962. He serves as the President of the Bar Association of India; President of the Society of Indian Law firms; and President of the Indian Law Foundation. He is the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, India and Member of the International Court of Arbitration, Paris.

Earlier, he has served as the Chairman of the Delhi Bar Council (1973 to 1977) and as the Chairman of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal. He was only the second Indian to be elected as the President of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) in 2013-2014. He also served as the Founder Co-Chair of the India Committee set up by the American Bar Association (Section of International Law).

A recipient of numerous awards, Dr Bhasin is the only Indian to be conferred the Honorary Life Membership by the International Bar Association in 1994 in Melbourne. He was conferred the National Law Day Award by the President of India in 2007. He was awarded the Plaque of Honour by the Prime Minister of India in 2002 for outstanding contribution to the rule of law. In 2013, Dr Bhasin was awarded Doctor of Laws (LLD) HonorisCausa by the Jaipur University.
