On November 18, the state government of Maharashtra passed the Maratha Reservation Bill, which will provide reservations for Marathas in government jobs and admissions in academic institution.
Notably, considering the recommendations put forth by the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission, it has been reported that Maharashtra will create a new category called SEBC (socially and economically backward) in order to give reservation to Marathas. The Commission’s recommendations were based on 25 parameters it had set for the study.
The Commission had on November 15 submitted its report on the social and economic conditions of the Marathas to Chief Secretary of Maharashtra Government DK Jain suggesting a 16 percent reservation for Marathas, observing that the community is socially and economically backward.
The report mentioned that a socially and educationally backward class can be extended benefits of reservation under Articles 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution, and in view of such extra-ordinary and exceptional condition, the state government is liable to take action.
