NCPCR asks Netflix to remove objectionable scene from series Bombay Begums

National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked Netflix to remove objectionable content and stop streaming its series Bombay Begum.

Netflix's series Bombay Begums contains some objectionable scenes which involve children in it. The Apex child right body has asked Netflix to remove the scenes and to stop the streaming of the series on its platform. The streaming should stop till the time it comes to any decision on the removal. The series shows the life of five women who have different aspirations.

The complaint was received from Twitter handles, acting upon which the NCPCR discussed with Netflix over representing and portraying the children in Bombay Begums and the objectionable scene it has.

The order said, "After detailed deliberation, the commission is of the view that these particular scenes violate relevant Sections of JJ Act, 2015, POCSO Act, 2012 and IPC, 1860 as minor children were used in these scenes. Therefore, Netflix is directed to immediately remove these scenes from the series and meanwhile till the time they come to any decision in this regard, they shall stop the streaming of this series on their platform."

NCPCR also wrote to Mumbai Police Commission to investigate and probe a scene of a child smoking cigarette. They stated that "Further, in one of the aforementioned scenes a minor girl was smoking cigarettes which is a violation of Section 77 of JJ Act, 2015 and therefore, the commission is forwarding this matter to Commissioner of Police, Mumbai for investigation/inquiry and deemed lawful necessary action".

The Commission also said, "The CP, Mumbai shall also inquire to ensure that no child labor laws/any other relevant laws of guidelines to regulate the participation of children in TV, etc. is violated at the time of shooting of this series".
