President of India Ram Nath Kovind has rejected a mercy petition of Nirbhaya gangrape case death row convict Mukesh Singh.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan has communicated the decision to the Ministry of Home Affairs who had forwarded his mercy petition to the President, recommending its rejection.

However, Mukesh Singh’s lawyer stated that he has not received any communication regarding the President’s decision about mercy petition.

Earlier, Mukesh Singh, who is one of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, had filed the mercy petition after the Supreme Court dismissed curative petitions filed by him.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had forwarded his mercy petition to the President reiterating that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi had recommended its rejection.

The four convicts – Mukesh Singh (32), Vinay Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) – were originally scheduled to be hanged to death on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar Jail.
