The Supreme Court has issued notice in response to the central government’s plea to transfer all petitions filed before different high courts challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to the Supreme Court.

The central government’s application will be next considered on January 22, when other petitions filed in Supreme Court challenging the CAA are listed.

It may be recalled that the central government had pointed out to the Supreme Court that more than 60 public interest litigations (PIL) have already been moved against the CAA.

The central government had also submitted in its plea before the Supreme Court that various high courts may take contrasting views about the matter.

It was pointed out that the Karnataka High Court had posted for hearing petitions filed before it challenging the constitutionality of the CAA, citing that there is no order by the Supreme Court barring high courts from taking up the matter.
