HFW in association with Attorney Rula Dajani
Founded in 1883, HFW traces its origins to the Holman family, pioneering maritime entrepreneurs and insurers from Topsham, England. The firm’s lineage began with the establishment of early marine insurance organizations, including the West of England Marine Insurance Association in 1832 and The Exeter Shipping Insurance Association in 1838. These foundations were further strengthened with the creation of The Shipowners’ Protection Association in 1855 and The West of England Steamship Owners’ P&I Association Ltd in 1870, dedicated to safeguarding steamship owners.
In 1883, Frank Holman, part of the family management firm John Holman & Sons, established a legal practice at 23 St. Mary Axe, London, marking the official beginning of HFW. Within two years, the firm merged with G.C. Downing and J.J. Handcock to form Downing & Holman, undergoing multiple transformations before becoming Holman, Birdwood & Co. The addition of Cecil Holman, E.A. Fenwick, and W.C. Willan in the early 1900s gave the firm its enduring name: Holman Fenwick & Willan. Relocating to No. 1 Lloyds Avenue in 1908, the firm continued to grow under this name from 1916 onwards.
Originally focused on maritime law, HFW has evolved into a leading global law firm with six core sectors: aerospace, commodities, construction, energy, insurance, and shipping. Known for its early international expansion, HFW opened offices in Paris (1977) and Hong Kong (1978), followed by a network now spanning 21 offices worldwide, including key locations in Singapore, Dubai, Melbourne, Brussels, Sydney, Houston, Abu Dhabi, Monaco, the British Virgin Islands, and Shenzhen.
HFW’s expertise extends beyond maritime to encompass corporate finance, regulatory matters, fraud and insolvency, digital trade, cybersecurity, employment, competition, logistics, mining, oil and gas, ports and terminals, government services, aviation, reinsurance, renewables, offshore projects, sanctions, yachts, litigation, and international arbitration. The firm also maintains a strategic partnership with Brazil’s leading insurance and aviation law firm, CAR, reinforcing its global reach.
Renowned for its deep industry knowledge, client-focused approach, and commitment to innovation, HFW continues to set the standard in complex, international legal services.
