First Solar accuses US Patent and Trademark Office of technology patents denial

It has been dealing with lawsuits against JinkoSolar, Mundra Solar and Canadian Solar alleging infringement of its patents

American solar technology company, First Solar, has shown distress, stating that the US Patent and Trademark Office director had denied third-party applications challenging the validity of its solar cell technology patents.

The three separate applications sought to invalidate First Solar's Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact Technology (TOPCT). Filed in 2025, by JinkoSolar, Mundra Solar and Canadian Solar, these were rejected on 20 November, 11 December, and 18 December.

First Solar said it obtained the UTOPCT patents and related international counterparts after the acquisition of TetraSun in 2013.

Meanwhile, the US District Court for the District of Delaware has been dealing with lawsuits by First Solar against JinkoSolar, Mundra Solar and Canadian Solar alleging infringement of its patents.

It goes to the global provider’s TOPCT, which overtook rival solar cell technology and crystalline silicon, due to its higher efficiency in converting sunlight into electricity.
