G&A Advocates LLP Announces Doreen Onwong’a as Partner and Head of Corporate Commercial
The leading full-service law firm in Kenya, G&A Advocates LLP, established in 2006 by Eric Gumbo, has strengthened its corporate and commercial practice with the appointment of Doreen Onwong’a as Partner and Head of Corporate Commercial. Onwong’a joins the firm at a pivotal time, as G&A Advocates LLP is acting on one of East Africa’s largest and most significant Initial Public Offerings (IPO) – the privatisation of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).
Doreen Onwong’a shared,
“I look forward to growing and strengthening this practice area and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead and what we can do as a firm.” She noted that the firm has been at the forefront of “a good number of sovereign finance transactions” in recent years.
Eric Gumbo, founder of G&A Advocates LLP, said,
“We are delighted to welcome Doreen Onwong’a to G&A Advocates LLP as Partner and Head of Corporate Commercial. She brings exceptional expertise, sound judgment, and a strong reputation for excellence, all of which align perfectly with the values and ambitions of our firm. Her appointment marks an important milestone in our continued growth and commitment to delivering outstanding service to our clients.”
Gumbo added.
“As we reflect on two decades of growth, relationships, and impact, we are also looking firmly to the future. Doreen’s leadership will play an important role in strengthening and expanding our Corporate Commercial practice, deepening our capabilities, and supporting the firm’s next phase of strategic development.”
Doreen Onwong’a has hit the ground running in her new role, advising the Privatization Authority and KPC on the KPC IPO alongside G&A Advocates LLP and TripleOKLaw LLP. Reflecting on the experience, she said,
“The KPC IPO reminded me that the true practice of the law is in the doing. The transactions done, the curiosity in understanding how different transactions were structured, the time spent understanding the regulatory framework as well as the ability to understand client needs… All that and more proved useful in providing agile advice and solutions to the team.”
With over a decade of experience, Doreen Onwong’a has acted as lead legal advisor on some of Kenya’s largest capital markets transactions, including the KES 100 billion KPC IPO, the KES 44.5 billion Talanta Infrastructure Asset Backed Security – the first Sukuk issued in Kenya to finance a PPP project – and the 2020 Centum Real Estate Zero Coupon Bond. She also regularly advises on structuring private debt and equity issuances and is particularly focused on supporting regional investment and cross-border capital market participation.
A graduate of the University of Nairobi, Doreen Onwong’a is an award-winning Certified Secretary and an accredited Governance Auditor. She joins G&A Advocates LLP from KN Law, where she spent six years as a partner, and previously served as senior in-house counsel at a Kenyan investment bank and a multinational investments and real estate company.
Doreen Onwong’a’s appointment marks a significant moment for G&A Advocates LLP as it celebrates 20 years of practice, underlining the firm’s commitment to delivering top-tier corporate and commercial legal services across Kenya and East Africa.
