Akshay Jaitly discloses Trilegal’s quadruple revenue jump from 2020–2025 in new book Trilegal – The Making of a Modern Indian Law Firm
A new book by Akshay Jaitly, co-founder of Trilegal, offers a rare inside account of how one of India’s prominent law firms scaled its revenue, ownership structure, and workforce to exceptional levels. The book, titled Trilegal – The Making of a Modern Indian Law Firm, also claims to be the first-ever instance of an Indian law firm publicly revealing its performance metrics.
Founded in 2000 by six lawyers, Trilegal has undergone a transformation that, according to the disclosed data, dramatically reshaped both its commercial standing and organisational size. Between 2020 and 2025 alone, the firm’s annual revenue nearly quadrupled, while the partnership grew threefold.
Revenue Milestones Highlighted in the Book
- 2001: Just under ₹2 crore
- 2020: ₹400 crore
- 2025: Approaching ₹1,600 crore
The book notes that Trilegal crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark for the first time in 2024.
Alongside its financial growth, Trilegal’s human capital has expanded significantly—rising from six founders and two associates in 2000 to around 145 equity partners and over 1,000 lawyers in 2025.
The book traces Trilegal’s evolution, detailing its founding years, early hurdles, and the unconventional ownership model that Jaitly believes lies at the heart of the firm’s success. Jaitly writes:
“…our past had laid the foundation for a transformation that took place in 2020-2025 that took everyone by surprise, even us. Revenue almost quadrupled, the size of the partnership almost trebled, and the firm may have just become India's largest, by both revenue and number of lawyers...
…Our recent growth has been so dramatic that I struggle to wrap my head around the scale. With it our standing has shifted - we are in every conversation about India's top law firms."
A strong believer in a collaborative organisational culture, Jaitly asserts that their model of partnership sharing played a central role in shaping the firm’s identity:
“A model based on well designed, merit-based sharing can build an institution. Moreover, people like how it feels to be in a collaborative environment...We've made mistakes and course-corrected repeatedly, but stayed true to a basic conviction: the firm must be bigger than any one of us.”
Jaitly also credits India’s economic trajectory as a crucial catalyst, adding that Trilegal’s growth has outpaced even its closest competitors:
“…our story is rooted in India's growth and the economic expansion of the post-liberalisation years. But at the same time, we appear to have outpaced our closest competitors more recently - an independent survey suggests that the largest six law firms grew headcount by 83 per cent on average over the past five years - we have trebled in the same period.”
What Jaitly Said on LinkedIn After the Launch
Reflecting on the book’s release, Jaitly shared his sentiments on LinkedIn, noting,
With much happiness, some amount of pride and not a little nervousness, I'm delighted to share the news of the publication of my first book:
Trilegal - The Making of a Modern Indian Law Firm.
"Writing the book has been a labour of love, just like the journey of the firm itself. I've had the privilege of being part of the best founding team anyone could have hoped for, and the deep pleasure of seeing many, many exceptional lawyers believe and find meaning in the vision we had back in 2000 and make it their own (and then some).
I trust the book will be of interest both to people within the profession and outside. At its heart, the story of Trilegal is that of a scrappy and ambitious startup that did alright and hopefully should resonate with anyone who has ever tried to do something different."
He described Trilegal as a “scrappy and ambitious startup that did alright”, acknowledging the contributions of founding members and the many lawyers who shaped the firm’s journey since 2000.
Publisher’s Description (Back Jacket) Jaitly’s book provides what the publisher calls a unique and data-rich account of an Indian corporate law firm’s development — from basements and living rooms to becoming one of India’s largest, most prestigious, and arguably most meritocratic firms. The narrative highlights Trilegal’s radical equity-sharing model, its growth challenges, defining decisions, and the role this structure played in building a collaborative institution.
