Leading South African law firm Bowmans recently reported the death of Robert Legh, the firm's chairman and senior partner.

The firm in a post on its social media handles Twitter and LinkedIn announced Legh's death saying it had 'lost a leader, a partner, a colleague and a friend'.

Legh, whose legal acumen had been recognised by various international legal directories, including Chambers Global, the Legal 500, Who's Who Legal, and the Global Competition Review, spent the entirety of his career with Bowmans.

He joined the firm as an associate in 1986 and became a partner in 1992. He founded the firm's competition practice in 1998 and led it for more than two decades before becoming chairman and senior partner in 2014.

During his seven years as Bowmans chairman and senior partner, Legh divided his time between chairing the firm and advising clients on complex antitrust matters.

Legh specialized in antitrust and regulatory law besides in mergers and acquisitions and mining law. He contributed immensely to the first South African textbook on competition law. In recent years, he worked on several high-profile cases relating to hostile mergers, abuse of dominance and cartels.
