The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) Special Prosecutor has informed the Supreme Court that the investigation against its former director Ranjit Sinha for allegedly diluting a CBI probe into coal block allocations scam is almost over and the final report will be ready soon.

The CBI Special Prosecutor made the statement after advocate Prashant Bhushan pointed out that no progress about the case is known though the investigation was ordered by the Supreme Court in 2015.

Earlier, advocate Bhushan had insisted that the court be kept updated about the matter since it is a serious matter involving a charge that the then CBI director Ranjit Sinha had allegedly overruled all investigating officers to protect somebody in the case.

After the CBI Special Prosecutor made his statement the Supreme Court about the status of the probe, it decided to wait until February 2020.

It may be recalled that in May 2015, the Supreme Court had held that former CBI director Sinha must be investigated about his private meetings with the accused in the coal block allocations scam to find out if these conversations had resulted in any dilution of the probe and the judicial process.

The Supreme Court had also constituted a special team which had favored a further investigation against Sinha in 2017, after finding a prima facie case against him.
