NGT Appoints Committee to Address Air Pollution Concerns Near AIIMS in the Indian capital

A seven-member committee has been formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) led by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel (Chairperson), Sudhir Agarwal (Judicial Member), and Dr. Senthil Vel (Expert Member) to investigate the failure of authorities in controlling air pollution near the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

It was stated in an application that a significant number of street vendors, shopkeepers, and vehicles were contributing to the pollution and hindering the smooth movement of ambulances.

It was also brought to the attention of the NGT that there was a lack of adequate greenery to counterbalance the levels of carbon dioxide and dust in the area around India’s premier medical institute instituted in 1956.

The applicant emphasised that even individuals who are in good health and visit the area are at risk of diseases due to air pollution. The applicant also provided photographs of the encroachments and evidence showing the adverse effects of air pollution.

According to the submission, AAQ Monitoring Stations near AIIMS in November-December recorded air quality statistics that were categorized as "severe."

The purpose of the committee is to investigate the allegations brought forward, such as the parking and traffic situation, and develop a plan to address the air pollution in the area.
