Justice Akil Kureshi has been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium to be appointed as Chief Minister of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, after the present Chief Justice S K Seth retires on June 9.

Justice Akil Kureshi began his practice in 1983 after obtaining an LLB degree the same year. He was appointed as an additional judge at the Gujarat High Court in March 2004 and was confirmed as a permanent judge in 2005.

Presently, Kureshi, who is the most senior judge of the Gujarat High Court, serves as a judge at the Bombay High Court.

Confusion had prevailed last year, after it was revealed that Justice A S Dave who is less senior to Kureshi would be appointed as Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court after the elevation of Justice Subhash Reddy to the Supreme Court.

Around the same time, the Gujarat Bar had reacted strongly after Justice Kureshi was transferred to the Bombay High Court.

However, eventually, Justice Kureshi served as Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court for a short period, until he was expected to assume his duties at the Bombay High Court.
