Bowmans appoints leading technology lawyer Robby Coelho as partner in Cape Town

The leading African law firm with a presence in six countries, Bowmans has appointed leading technology lawyer and award-winning entrepreneur Robby Coelho (Partner) to its Cape Town office, with effect from 1 January 2026. The hire follows the firm’s recent strategic partner appointment of Justin Ramages (Partner) in December 2025, further strengthening its technology sector capabilities.

Coelho specialises in technology and related commercial matters, including digital services, infrastructure, artificial intelligence, data and privacy, intellectual property (IP) and fintech, along with the agreements supporting modern business operations. His multi-jurisdictional experience across Africa, the Middle East and Europe, combined with his career spanning private practice, in-house leadership and entrepreneurship, provides a unique perspective on the evolving technology landscape.

Commenting on the appointment, Bowmans chairman and senior partner Ezra Davids (Chairman and Senior Partner) said

" ‘Rapid development in technology is fundamentally impacting all businesses. Robby has a rare skill set that will complement that of our existing team and help us to build out our technology law capabilities while keeping pace with our clients’ increasing and changing requirements.’"

Coelho began his career at a South African law firm, where he later led the TMT and IP practice and the TMT sector group. He subsequently served as Legal Manager for Africa and the Middle East at Hewlett Packard, followed by five years at MTN Group as Executive: Group Legal, where he oversaw digital services and fintech businesses, procurement transactions, strategic projects across Africa and the Middle East, and managed the group’s IP portfolio.

In 2021, he relocated to Luxembourg and became the founding CEO of Dalza, a web and mobile platform designed to streamline care coordination for neurodivergent children. The business expanded into South Africa and across Europe, and received recognition as a 2025 Global Champion at the World Summit Awards, along with being a joint winner of the Luxembourg Government Touch Base Programme.

Coelho holds BA, LLB and LLM degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. Speaking on his move, he said he looks forward to working with Bowmans to expand and transform the delivery of tech-related legal services across the continent, focusing on solving complex challenges and achieving client outcomes.
