Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie has announced the promotion of 59 lawyers to partner or partner-equivalent roles across its global offices — with three standout promotions based in Africa.

South African energy and infrastructure expert Ryan Alho, South African M&A specialist Tanya Seitz, and Egyptian banking and finance counsel Mostafa Lotayef have each been promoted to partner or partner equivalent, effective 1 July 2025. These appointments are part of a larger round that brings the total number of new partners added by Baker McKenzie since July 2024 to 107, combining internal promotions and 48 lateral hires worldwide.

Milton Cheng, Global Chair of Baker McKenzie, said, “More than ever this year, it is an honour to announce our promotions to partner. I extend my sincere congratulations to this exceptionally talented group of lawyers who will help us continue to build on our strengths as a global firm in a broad range of locations, practices, and sectors. Their unwavering dedication to client service and excellence will be key in driving our firm’s success and we look forward to their many more contributions in the years to come.”

In South Africa, the Johannesburg office highlighted the elevation of Ryan and Tanya to Directors, recognising their exceptional legal expertise and their strong commitment to client service and the firm’s collaborative values.

Lerisha Naidu, Country Managing Partner, said, “Tanya and Ryan exemplify the very best of Baker McKenzie, their integrity, talent and work ethic set a standard for us all. Their promotion is not just recognition of their individual success, but speaks to the calibre of leadership we strive to build at the firm. We are incredibly proud of them and excited for what the future holds.”

Ryan Alho is trusted by clients for his work on private M&A and private equity transactions across sectors including renewable energy, consumer, education, waste management, and property development. He is also well known for advising on black economic empowerment (BEE) transactions. Tanya Seitz, who was recently shortlisted for a Rising Star Award at the 2025 IFLR Women in Business Law EMEA Awards, has a broad practice spanning public and private M&A, equity capital markets, takeovers, reorganisations, securities law, corporate governance, and healthcare.

Meanwhile in Egypt, Mostafa Lotayef has steadily grown within Baker McKenzie Cairo – Helmy, Hamza & Partners, having started his career at Commercial International Bank Egypt. His practice includes banking and finance matters as well as complex energy, mining, and infrastructure projects. He has recently led the Cairo office’s fintech focus — covering mobile banking, digital payments, BNPL, and other financial technology services. His leadership in real estate finance, leveraged lending, acquisition finance, debt restructuring, and debt capital markets continues to shape the Cairo team’s market presence.

Baker McKenzie Cairo celebrated his promotion online, posting: “Congratulations to Mostafa on a very well-deserved promotion! On behalf of the entire Cairo team, we wish him continuous success and best of luck.”
