Tom Roberts Joins Goodwin as Debt Finance Partner to Strengthen European Private Equity Platform
Goodwin has announced that debt finance specialist Tom Roberts is joining the firm’s Private Equity practice as a partner in London. Tom’s appointment further enhances Goodwin’s European Private Equity platform, which continues to experience significant growth and client activity.
Carl Bradshaw, London-based partner in Goodwin’s Private Equity practice, said:
“Our European private equity platform continues to see increasing client activity and we remain focused on attracting high calibre talent to meet this demand. Tom’s sophisticated finance expertise complements our capabilities for supporting our sponsor and portfolio company clients in structuring, negotiating and closing complex transactions across our international platform. His technical excellence, commercial acumen, and strong client service skills come highly recommended and fully align with our strategy of building the premier destination for private equity and growth capital in the most dynamic and innovative industries. We are delighted to welcome Tom to our team.”
Tom Roberts joins Goodwin from Kirkland & Ellis, where he was a debt finance partner. With over 12 years of private practice experience in both London and Hong Kong, Tom specializes in leveraged finance and event-driven financings, including buyouts, bolt-on acquisitions, recapitalizations, and refinancings. He also brings valuable experience in margin lending, real estate finance, and hybrid instruments such as preferred equity and convertible bonds.
Tom’s arrival follows the recent additions of partners Paul Gray and Lewis Gaut, further expanding Goodwin’s London debt finance capabilities. He will work closely with Simon Fulbrook and the wider debt finance team to enhance Goodwin’s comprehensive offering across private equity, private credit, fund finance, real estate, and sports opportunities.
Tom Roberts commented:
“Goodwin’s extensive private equity client roster, deep industry immersion and collaborative culture were key drivers in my decision to join. I’m excited to contribute to the team’s growth plans and to help clients navigate increasingly sophisticated financing solutions to enhance their returns.”
Tom is the latest senior hire for Goodwin’s UK private equity practice, which has recently welcomed partners Ian Keefe, George Weavil, Jacqueline Eaves, Arvin Abraham, and John Anderson. With more than 350 lawyers worldwide dedicated to private equity, Goodwin advises clients across the full investment lifecycle — from fund formation to leveraged buyouts, growth equity investments, and exits. The firm’s London office plays a crucial role in delivering integrated, cross-border solutions to private equity sponsors and portfolio companies.
Goodwin was ranked the number one law firm in LSEG Q1 2025 league tables for global M&A by deal count and was named Law Firm of the Year (Transactions) in the 2024 Mergermarket British Private Equity Awards.
