Withers KhattarWong Announces Leadership Transition: Nathan and Yong Take the Helm as Joint Managing Partners

Deborah Barker was the first woman to hold the role of Managing Partner at Withers KhattarWong in Singapore and is stepping down from the role with effect from March 31. Shashi Nathan and Daniel Yong will take over as Joint Managing Partners.

Barker expressed her confidence in Nathan and Yong's ability to lead the firm into its next phase of growth. She said that they will continue to build on the momentum that has been established.

In 2014, Barker achieved a significant milestone by becoming one of the pioneering female partners at KhattarWong, a prominent law firm in Singapore. During her tenure, she demonstrated exceptional leadership. Notably, the same year, she spearheaded the establishment of a formal alliance with Withers, leading to the creation of Withers KhattarWong.

Margaret Robertson, global CEO of Withersworldwide, lauded Barker for her dedication and pursuit of legal excellence. Barker’s tireless efforts resonate with the core values that drive the firm’s success.

“This is an exciting new chapter led by Nathan and Yong. With their fresh perspectives and strategic vision, I believe they will embrace emerging challenges and continue to bridge the local and global aspects of the firm’s operations,” Robertson said.

Nathan is the head of the white-collar defence and investigations practice at Withers KhattarWong. Yong is the head of the funds practice.

Nathan, with over 30 years of experience in white-collar and criminal law in Singapore, has earned a reputation for his expertise in guiding clients through complex matters related to fraud, corruption, insider trading and market manipulation. His seasoned insights and strategic counsel make him a valuable asset in the legal arena.

Nathan, who now shares the role with Young, expresses his gratitude for the privilege of stepping into this position. Acknowledging Barker’s remarkable leadership, which has been instrumental in driving Withers KhattarWong to success over the years, Nathan is determined to build upon this robust foundation. “I am committed to steering our team towards new opportunities, embracing innovation and ensuring our clients receive the best legal solutions,” Nathan said.

Yong's expertise lies in investment funds, cross-border private equity and M&A transactions. He has experience managing complex mandates across various international firms and regions including Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, India and China.

Yong, expressing humility and honour, embraces the opportunity to assume this new role. Alongside Nathan, he remains committed to driving strategic growth and fostering innovation at Withers KhattarWong.

“Our clients and our people are important to us, and we will endeavour to provide them with our best service and care. We will explore strategic partnerships in overseas markets like Indonesia, Vietnam and India,” Yong added.
