Central Government Re-appoints Justice Ashok Bhushan as NCLAT Chairperson

The Central Government has re-appointed former Supreme Court Justice Ashok Bhushan as Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), extending his tenure until he attains the age of 70 on July 4, 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ proposal for his re-appointment, as per the order issued on November 7, 2025, by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions.

Born on July 5, 1956, in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Justice Bhushan graduated in Arts in 1975 and earned his law degree with First Division from Allahabad University in 1979. He enrolled with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh on April 6, 1979, and practised on the civil and original side before the Allahabad High Court. During his career, he served as standing counsel for Allahabad University, the State Mineral Development Corporation Limited, and several municipal bodies, banks, and educational institutions, and was later elected Senior Vice-President of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association.

Justice Bhushan was elevated as permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court on April 24, 2001. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016, and was appointed Chairman of the Ravi Beas River Tribunal in July 2020. He retired from the Supreme Court on July 4, 2021.

Justice Bhushan joined NCLAT as Chairperson on November 8, 2021, and has since presided over significant matters involving corporate law, insolvency, and competition statutes. His re-appointment ensures continuity of leadership at the appellate tribunal until July 2026.
