Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on November 24, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Supreme Court judges, and dignitaries from India and abroad.
Justice Kant succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai, who retired on November 23, 2025. He will serve as CJI for a tenure of nearly 15 months, demitting office on February 9, 2027, upon turning 65.
Born in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant has had a distinguished legal career spanning over four decades. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019, he served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
