Paul Hastings appoints infrastructure partner trio

After Stroock's restructuring team of 18 partners arrived in March, a number of new hires followed

New York law firm Shearman & Sterling has hired a three-member team from Paul Hastings to strengthen the firm's energy transition policy.

Tan and Freedman are set to co-chair the firm's infrastructure and energy practice, while Robert Freedman and Alexandro Padres are among the firm's prominent project development and finance lawyers. Several of the world's largest asset managers and banks rely on our team for energy and infrastructure advice.

The exceptional group at Paul Hastings has superior intellectual capital, execution and reputation, said Seth Zachary, the chair of the firm. This group adds synergies and client value to our existing infrastructure and energy transition practices, which are widely recognised as among the top five infrastructure and energy practices in the world."

Following its March hiring of an 18-partner restructuring team from Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, the Los Angeles-based firm has now added a new restructuring group, with most of its members based in New York.

For the past 15 years, Freedman served at Shearman as co-leader of its global project development and finance practice group as well as lead industry coordinator. As a former employee of Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, he started his career with GE Energy Financial Services. Finance and development, asset acquisitions and sales and restructurings are his areas of expertise.

After spending 14 years at Shearman, Padres led its Latin America practice group. A brief stint at Debevoise & Plimpton preceded his work at Shearman between 2002 and 2007. His first job was in Mexico City in 1996 at Curtis Mallet-Prevost Colt & Mosle. A majority of his practice involves electrical, oil and gas infrastructure, as well as metals and mining projects.

In the meantime, Tan has worked at Shearman for more than two decades, most recently leading its global project development practice along with Freedman and serving as global finance co-head. In addition to renewable energy and conventional power, he specializes in structuring and restructuring projects.

At a time of great significance for many industries, the chance to work with Paul Hastings and its outstanding finance and corporate practices in an environment that focuses on energy transition and infrastructure was a "one in a lifetime" experience for us.

Following a successful financial year, Paul Hastings' global revenue grew by 20 percent in 2021 to hit $1.57bn, driven by a 20.5 percent increase in PEP.

As part of its plans to open an office in New York last month, Womble Bond Dickinson hired five attorneys from Abelman Frayne & Schwab, the boutique intellectual property law firm, to open its 20th US office.

In January, Brown Rudnick added eight lawyers from McCarter & English to its New York technology practice, significantly enhancing its global presence.
