Senior Advocate Dr. Milind Sathe Appointed as the New Advocate General of Maharashtra
Senior Advocate Dr. Milind Sathe has been appointed as the new Advocate General for the State of Maharashtra, with his appointment taking effect on December 8, 2025. The decision was finalized during the Maharashtra government’s cabinet meeting held in Nagpur.
Dr. Sathe succeeds Dr. Birendra Saraf, who resigned in September 2025 for personal reasons after serving over three years in the role. He continued to discharge his duties until the government completed the appointment process for his successor.
Dr. Sathe joined the Bar in 1982 and was designated as a senior advocate by the Bombay High Court in 2005. He has served the legal fraternity in several prominent capacities, including a seven-year tenure as President of the Bombay Bar Association from 2014 to 2021.
He has extensive experience in public interest litigation, legal aid matters and has appeared as amicus curiae in significant cases. Dr. Sathe has also represented the State of Maharashtra, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, and numerous public sector undertakings as senior counsel. His broad litigation experience and deep understanding of public law matters position him strongly for his new role as the State’s top law officer.
