Sameer Chugh elevated as Group General Counsel at Bharti Group

Sameer Chugh has recently been elevated as Group GC at the Bharti Group. Earlier Sameer was a Director – Legal and Regulatory at Bharti Airtel. Sameer has been with Bharti since the last 5 years. Sameer in his new role will be responsible for the legal function of the entire Bharti Group. In his new role he shall be looking at all shareholder matters across the Group in all geographies and shall also be providing counsel and advice to the operational entities on strategic and group wide matters.

Sameer has been described by peers as ‘a very clear headed, driven professional’ with a ‘problem solving approach’. Sameer is a well-respected legal adviser with more than 23 years of professional experience. After the initial two years with NCR Corporation India Pvt. Ltd., of working as the in-house Legal Counsel, he took the position as head of legal and regulatory in 2003 at telecoms provider BT India post which he moved to the UK with BT itself, doing major transactions across the globe. Post that, he was hired by the Essar Group to act as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for their communications business and global head for M&A. After having spent three years in Essar, he moved to Cummins India, a global power provider, as its Vice President for legal, secretarial and General Counsel in 2011.

In 2014 he was hired by Bharti Airtel, the world’s third largest mobile operator, to handle its legal and regulatory work as Legal Director for South East Asia. Sameer has handled a total of over $22bn worth of transactions in his career having been involved in cross-border deals in various parts of the world including, the US, UK, South Africa and Singapore. He has been recently quoted as saying, ‘apart from providing legal advice and support, a corporate counsel must be a commercial advisor and provide the “how to do it”, while steering clear from “how not to do it”.

Before becoming an in-house counsel, Sameer has worked with law firms like Singhania & Co. and Kochhar & Co.

Sameer earned his LL.B. Degree from the Symbiosis Society’s Law College, University of Pune, and holds Msc. Degree in the Telecom Business and a Masters in Marketing Management from Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies. Sameer has obtained the Msc in Telecom Business from University College of London in UK.

He has been involved in cross border Mergers & Acquisitions and also transactions in various parts of the world including, the US, UK, South Africa, Singapore. Sameer has extensive experience in the telecom sector and has knowledge on both the B2C and B2B side of the telecom business.
