Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison has hired two partners from A&O Shearman within 24 hours, continuing the rapid expansion of its London office. The firm announced the appointment of infrastructure partner Tom Levine, followed by the addition of restructuring partner Nick Charlwood.

The firm announced hiring infrastructure partner Tom Levine a day after it hired restructuring partner Nick Charlwood. With this, the number of London partners of Paul Weiss rises to 40 from just three in the summer of 2023 after former office head Alvaro Membrillera left Kirkland & Ellis.

After hiring Neel Sachdev and Roger Johnson, credited with Kirkland’s rise to the top of London’s legal market, the office embarked upon an explosive period of growth in August alongside three more Kirkland partners. Ever since, the office has been regularly adding partners from UK and US rivals under Johnson and Sachdev’s supervision, building a top-tier English law practice around private equity.

Levine advises clients on complex commercial and regulatory matters, M&A and financing transactions in the telecom and technology sectors.

Sachdev reportedly said, “Levine brings two decades of experience in advising established and emerging players in the TMT sector. His expertise in the sector, combined with the firm’s comprehensive corporate capabilities, will benefit our clients investing in the digital infrastructure space.”

Made partner at Allen & Overy in 2021, Charlwood focuses on cross-border debt restructurings, insolvencies and special situations financings.

Calling Charlwood a ‘key hire’ for Paul Weiss’s restructuring group in London, Sachdev reportedly said, “With Liz Osborne joining last year to lead our European restructuring efforts and the recent announcement that Richard Hornshaw will lead European disputes, Charlwood’s addition strengthens a team equipped to handle the most complex cross-border restructuring matters.”
