Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo recommended as Chief Justice of Patna High Court by Supreme Court Collegium

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Orissa High Court as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. The recommendation was made during the Collegium meeting held on December 18, 2025, which proposed the elevation of five High Court judges as Chief Justices across different High Courts in India. The Collegium was headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.

Justice Sahoo was born on June 5, 1964, and completed his early education at Nuabazar High School, Cuttack. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from Stewart Science College, Cuttack, and subsequently obtained two Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees privately from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, one in English and another in Oriya. He completed his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Cuttack Law College and enrolled as an Advocate with the Orissa State Bar Council on November 26, 1989.

Before his elevation to the bench, Justice Sahoo practiced extensively across District Courts, the Orissa High Court, and various tribunals including the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT), and Consumer Forums, specializing in criminal law and service matters. He was appointed as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on July 2, 2014. In addition to his judicial responsibilities, he currently serves as the Executive Chairman of the Odisha State Legal Services Authority and as Chairman of the High Court Legal Services Committee, reflecting his commitment to legal service and judicial administration.

The Collegium’s recommendation highlights Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo’s extensive judicial experience, legal acumen, and administrative capability, positioning him to lead the Patna High Court effectively as its Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on December 18, 2025, also recommended the elevation of other judges as Chief Justices of various High Courts, including Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta to the Uttarakhand High Court; Smt. Revati P. Mohite Dere to the Meghalaya High Court; Justice M.S. Sonak to the Jharkhand High Court; and Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque to the Sikkim High Court.
