The Supreme Court has declined to stay the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) order prohibiting use of reverse osmosis (RO) filters in Delhi.
Instead, the court has asked the RO manufacturers’ association to approach the central government with their representation, before any notification is issued by the court.
A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Rohinton Nariman declined to stay the NGT order.
The lawyer for the RO manufacturers’ association contended that the NGT has imposed a blanket ban, and that RO water is used for many medical purposes, especially in dialysis.
“RO removes heavy material from water. It is useful in treating contaminated water,” said RO manufacturers’ counsel insisted, adding that it has abundant material to support its case.
The Supreme Court directed the central government to consider the representation from the RO manufacturers’ association before passing any notification.
The RO manufacturers’ association is supposed to submit their material within 10 days and the government has been directed to consider it's representation before the court passes any notification.
